THEY Sure Know Better...

A woman in her 50s enters a clinic. She complains for nearly 15 minutes as the adroit doctor listens to her every word patiently. In the end he gives her the necessary advice caring for what's best for her. She walks out. On her way out she whispers to the next patient; he is no good. He hasn't prescribed me anything!

---

It is said that medical schools will soon close down as the need for doctors has vanished. Anyone who knows the alphabet is entitled to analyze & guide patients through officially of this date. Doctors will remain intact only for jotting down the prescriptions on demand...

They felt much easier paying mechanics to fix their cars than paying doctors fixing they, themselves.
But why, it was a mystery...

I cant say much about the woman.I know a person who has been to a lot of physiologists and physiatrists for her Schizophrenia but she hasn't recovered! There is no hope for her.No God would be able to save her as well. She has to suffer for ever.

PS: what doctor are you if you don't mind the question?

Is biomedicine all patients need? Why are alternative treatments so succesful, whether traditional healings or new age methods?

I don't think that biomedicine will disappear anytime soon. The hegemony is not absolute but still very strong. But in order to work succesfully, the biomedicine needs to take patients' beliefs and expectations more into account. It also needs to revise it's definition of personhood. A person is not just a biological machine.

Cheers :)

BTW, nice graphics. Your heading is now much more pronounced.

It must be frustrating to be a good doctor. I think maybe 90% of healing is from that careful listening, not necessarily from some pill or another, but you are right, many patients expect the doctor to give them magic medicine! My children's doctor years ago was very good about telling us when something was not fixable by a pill or whatever. I liked this, but I know he had patients who wondered why they didn't get Real Medicine.
And thanks for your comments at my site. I find graveyards very calming to my spirit because they do remind me that others have been, and others will be, and my time here may be brief.

Ignorance is a disease.
I wish we had a prescription for that!

Love the new headboard ;)

As for the patients, they usually need medicine for the souls as much for their body. It's not only hearing them talk but listening to them and feeling their "pain". The healing is then an much mental as physical ;)

I echo Farzad's and Me's thoughts! A doctor is more than an Rx pad, you know? To me, and this is just my opinion, if I see a doc, I'm in there all of a minute and 39 seconds and he or she starts writing an Rx, I know I'm in the wrong place. Listening and communicating comes first, from both paries. It's a joint effort, not a drug buffet.

back home, in Morocco, most of the "moms" would consider a dr "not good" if he doesn't prescribe medicines to their babies..
i was in my friend's cabinet when i heard a woman "begging" him to write a prescription for her daughter who according to my friend ,just needed some rest..
it's the plecebo effect,i think..u feel better just thinking of taking a pill..maybe..

Frank - well actually there are numerous disease with unknown causes :"> We are working on this case...

Hydra - I wish we had many who understood the point. I am with you all the way in the reason why other methods have gained success...

Happy you enjoy the graphic.

Jarvenpa - I have only attended the nearby graveyard twice & I must say it was my worst moments ever as I was witnessing the death of two close relatives. It is necessary though to visit the place from time to time to get a better insight.

dr a - perhaps all we need is Madam Pomfrey from the hogwarts ;-) our magic is slowly fading out!!

Farzad - speechless man! that was so strong.

me - unfortunately treatment has become more of a show than an activity. Most patient still have the misled belief that a good doctor is the one with the most painful treatment!! Amazing how they get well with a placebo Injection! ...

Livewire - well said LW. In the end all the doctor can do is come up with the right guide. If a double-sided connection fails to occur between doc-patient then that treatment is destined to fail.

foulla - perhaps these is an epidemic disease spread through the developing countries. Numerous the cases I have seen of the placebo effect. tnx for the visit

Hi Omid, your new heading looks really good!

I have known some doctors who didn't take the time to listen. They were all men. I am not sure if they were just arrogant or if they were greedy. I find either to be unacceptable in a doctor. Well, a few years ago, I decided to try and see women doctors if I could. They seem to listen better. Of course, I am sure you listen carefully. :)

I am sorry that your graveyard visit was at such a raw time; may your heart heal. My last visit in such a time was to bury my best friend, a year ago September. That is, it is true, much different than visiting an old place where the people are dead many decades and the roses grow.

Yeah, so much of it is mental. Maybe they should just make a line of sugar placbo pills and if the doctor feels it's something mental but the patient still wants a prescription, s/he could prescribe one of those. Then again, I guess there could be numerous lawsuits, etc, but oh well.

If I were instead of the woman, I would say that he is no good. He hasn't describe me anything!

I believe that ,nowadays, everybody has a kind of sense about different desease. The only reason that keeps them trustful and needy to doctors is to complete their knowledge and feelings about their desease.
It is not enough to say how to take care, they must know where did this come from and what has happened in their body.

david - first of all it is nice to C U R back! how did it all go??

Actually the majority of docs are not gonna keep info inside but sincerely give patients their best but still it is never enough & in some other cases there is an argument over what you have said and what the patients sister in-law has told her!! ;-) it's so different while wearing the white coat I guess...

negar - tnx for the link

Jarvenpa - yeah it is not so pleasent for me. Yet it is somewhat wierd as I see many die right infront of my very eyes but still graveyards give me the-helpless impression more...

em - If doctors become extinct who will parents replace for frightening their kids for the painful injections & doctors!!

Juliana - well that is a brilliant idea you've got there! but from experience I think it should be the bitterest pill on earth to make them feel best ;-) anything sweet does not imply the feeling of a medicine!!!

Kimia - well I ain't gonna deny the fact that there exists cases of insufficiant explanations but still I somewhat find it unfair to accept there is a general knowledge of disease available among the population in comparison to what doctors know. A doctor who studies day & night for 7-8 years & practices the art of medicine is... :-)

just bloghopped from someone else blog.nice blog u have. i think most patients expect something to be consume thru the oral cavity rather than just advices poking thru the brain. remember the rules, first do no harm. but then i got similar incident happened to me while doing locum, and i gave the patient a jab of vit b 12, not harmful; painful but at least the patient satisfied...

Thanks Omid, I had a good visit with a very old friend living in Tennessee. It was about an eight hour drive from where I live in Indiana. While I was down there, I helped him do some fixing up on his house and we had a really good visit. Thanks for asking. :)
