The woman could not face her husband when he came to visit her in the hospital. She kept her head down as she muttered her thoughts through words. Trying to avoid his eyes, she reluctantly managed to tell him about the abortion. She looked strangely pale & filled with guilt as the husband stared upon her in pity. It would have been their 3rd after her 4th pregnancy. Medically there had been no child at all but the manifestations. The man gave the woman another tip to toe glance, turned his back on her & left the ward without a word, failing to witness the flooding tears in her eyes…

No matter which way you look at it... pro-life or pro-choice.... there are casualties.
Whoever said life was easy, found that answer at the bottom of a bottle of tequila.
Hi Omid :)
U know what... I'm with pro choice here and I still don't know if I'm right or wrong!
Nice post!
Cheers :)
Omid, I am really confused by this post. Why would a married couple have to have three abortions? Do you mean that the fetuses were badly deformed or something?
Personally, I am pro-choice. However, I see most abortions as something that could be avoided, as an unintended pregnancy can almost always be prevented. Proper use of modern birth control is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. In the U.S., many unintended pregnancies occur in girls under the age of 18 who were not taught about methods of birth control by their parents of by their teachers in school. Religious fundamentalists just don't understand that whether they like it or not, most young people today are sexually active. Therefore, the many abstenance (just say no to sex) programs that the fundamentalists promote for public schools, which do not teach children about effective methods of birth control, are actually causing an increased rate of teenage pregnancies. This is quite tragic in my opinion!
Wow. That was powerful. Sometimes at the most painful times you are left alone. Whether he left because he was hurting or just a jackass, I don't know. What I can say is that him turning his back will be their undoing in some way; trust has been shattered at a crucial, life altering moment.
The maxim says: Selfishness surface stupidity and supidity pops-up selfishness. Again the old story of the hen and the egg, VA LAIAALaL ASHAR, VA MAA ADRAAKA...!
It's not a paradox, it's just sad.
I agree with LW. Not saying anything when both of them suffered a great loss and are obviously hurting, caused more damage and it will be their undoing unless they do something about it. Like the heading says, "& Life goes ON", but it is no fun going it alone.
[Say doc, I am curious... you in Iran, right? If you are, is abortion legal over there?]
At first I was a bit annoyed about this post since it left me with so many unanswered questions. But then after reading it a couple of more times, I started to realize that the questions didn’t really matter. It was like I had been the one who had seen this couple in a hospital and walking past them had caught a little bit of their conversation. Now I could make my own mind about what the whole story was.
In this case the pregnancy had willingly happened although the couple didn have a contraception method. They had a boy & a girl already after the first gravidity had ended in a still birth & this time it was a blighted ovum (means the gestational sac is present but there is no embro at all!!)
I just passed the scene but it had a horrible effect on me. The man didn care to stay for a single word of reassurance to calm the poor wife!
Chitty - some poetic lines you got there abt life!! Has me under its spell :-)
Farzad - well this has always been a great issue. Guess there'll be only openions on this one rather than rules...
dr a - I have done loads of foolish stuff in my life but I have learnt so far to avoid scees with DANGER sign in bold ;-)
david - actually there are numerous reasons for abortion that form a big chapter in gynecology books but the guy seemed to have ambitions for more ;-) he already had a boy & a girl but treated his wife like she was some kindda baby-producing factory rather than a human...
livewire - yeah. If couples don' care enough to support each other in difficulties then what is the point of marrying!?
gazankhan - yeah I guess that's somewhat the case, a true portrait of selfishness illustrated in the scene...
shirin - just the same feeling I got when I witnessed the scene. So many unanswered questions yet so many to analyse...
Omid, I did not know that it was possible for a woman to be pregnant without an embryo! After reading your post again, I realize that I should have commented on how much of a jerk the husband was! I am curious, are you an obstetric/gynecology specialist?
David your views are all well directed! there is no special topic but what you prefer to note :-)
Well as a GP one should know all abt medicine... in specialties those already known will be explained more :-)
